Let’s face it, as a parents we have a way of making some tasks much more difficult than they need to be. A long car trip to visit grandma and grandpa isn’t that taxing (thanks iPad!!!) and an early dinner out at that lovely Italian restaurant down the street isn’t so bad as long as you pack plenty of crayons and matchbox cars. But there are still some things that strike fear in the hearts of most parents. Take for example a nice day out at the beach with the kids. Normally just the thought of sunscreen and sand is enough to induce a cold sweat. However, with Memorial Day weekend right around the corner now is the perfect time to put your fears to rest and enjoy some fun in the sun with these 8 easy steps to help you survive a day at the beach.
1. Make Sunscreen Fun
Nothing about a day at the beach feels as daunting as having to cover your kids in sunscreen. However, by treating it as a game your kids will not only learn to sit still but beg for you to reapply later. If a little friendly competition doesn’t work parents can always try SPF clothing which protects kids from harmful UV rays.
2. Strength In Numbers
The more the merrier as a day at the beach is made infinitely more enjoyable when surrounded by friends and family. Plus, the more eyes on the kids the more you’ll be able to relax and take some time for yourself.
3. It Starts With The Feet
When spending a day at the beach it’s important that you pick the right footwear for your kids. Sneakers are not always the best choice and some kids have a difficult time walking in flip flops. What you need are comfortable shoes that keep the kids feet dry and are easy on easy off like water shoes or sandals.
4. Save The Toys For The Playroom
There is no sense lugging bag after bag of toys to the beach when all the kids really want to do is splash around in the water and build sandcastles. Shovels, buckets and an inflatable raft will suffice on most days. If you have multiple children make sure you to bring one for each.
5. Make Your Own Shade
Warm weather is a good problem to have but a break from the sun in required which is why it’s important to bring the right umbrella, one that can be easily adjusted and provides enough cover. For parents with really young kids a tent might not be a bad idea either.
6. A Fan For The Flames
When the wind dies down it’s important to keep the breeze on which is why packing a small, battery operated fan is essential to keep the young ones cool.
7. Frozen Drinks Aren’t Just For Adults
Kids are always disappointed when lunch time rolls around and the drinks you brought to the beach are lukewarm at best. Try putting the juice boxes in the freezer the night before which should help keep things at the right temperature.
8. The Magic of Baby Powder
As your day at the beach draws to a close a little baby powder can clear the legs and feet of any unwanted salt and sand.
